Doug Edgerton, AVP, Store and Corporate Facilities, Ascena Retail Group
Take us on the journey of your career path. How did you end up where you are?
I started in procurement for an HVAC supplier, which then led me to a project management role in facilities project work. After a brief stint back in the procurement arena, I was once again lured back to retail construction and facilities, which led me to a Director of Facilities role for Justice, to present-day AVP for Ascena Retail. I look forward to continuing to grow both personally and professionally.
How do you see the FM industry growing in the future?
It’s not necessarily tied to growth; it is more of a hope. I hope that Generation Z seizes the opportunity and looks at the shortage of skilled tradespeople at present, and grabs the opportunity to learn a craft and flourish.
Why should someone become a ConnexFM member?
It’s a great way to grow both their professional network and their FM capabilities. There are many ways to get involved — that’s the key benefit of being a ConnexFM member.
What advice do you have for someone just starting out in FM?
Attitude and adaptability to change are crucial. Don’t be afraid to fail, as you always learn from it. I’m a fan of quotes, and I believe Charles Swindoll hits the nail on the head: “The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for the day.” This quote from Sir Winston Churchill applies, as well: “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.”
What music is on your playlist?
I am a fan of music that spans many genres — From U2, to Luke Combs, to Dropkick Murphys.
